Writing a prompt for an AI image generator

Subject, setting, light, style: a simple structure that gets usable pictures in fewer tries.

An image generator draws exactly what you describe and guesses the rest. The more precisely the description covers what matters to you, the fewer attempts you need. A short, ordered prompt works better than a long list of adjectives.

Start with the subject

Name the main subject first, with one or two concrete attributes: "a grey cat sleeping on a stack of books", not "a cute animal picture". One subject per picture; two or three interacting subjects is already difficult.

Then the setting and the light

Say where the scene is and what the light is like: "in a sunlit kitchen, morning light from a window". Light words — golden hour, overcast, candlelight, studio — change the mood more than any adjective.

Finish with the style and the format

Choose the medium: photograph, watercolour, flat illustration, 3D render, pencil sketch. Add the format you need — square for a profile picture, landscape for a slide, portrait for a phone wallpaper. Write the medium into the prompt itself and pick the format in the tool.

Refining a result

Change one thing at a time between generations: the light, then the colour, then the framing. If an element keeps appearing that you do not want, describe what you want instead rather than listing what to exclude. Regenerate variations of the closest result.

Checklist

  1. One subject, named concretely
  2. A setting and a light
  3. A medium and a format
  4. Short sentences, no list of adjectives
  5. Change one element per attempt

Write the prompt as you would describe the picture to an illustrator over the phone: what it shows, where, in what light, in what style. That is all the generator needs.
